| Q. What are the statistics printed at the bottom of each page? |
| A. In the bottom of each page we provide some statistics. For instance, each page requires data from the database. We show the number of queries sent to the MySQL server to request the necessary data for the page as well as the total length of time to generate the page. This is to help us find bottlenecks in the site. If you consistently see a page which is taking too long to generate or seems to be requiring an unusually high number of database requests the please let us know so we can look into it further. Firefox users will also see statistics on the revision number and release name. We use the Subversion version control system to keep track of code updates. Each time we commit some code changes the revision number is incremented. The revision number shown at the bottom of the page indicates which revision the site is currently using. For instance, the main site will almost always operate with a much lower revision number than the "beta", or testing, site where we are slowly rolling out the new code changes for experienced users to test. When we roll out a new revision to the site we usually give it a "release" name to help identify it. These numbers will help us to locate and fix any bugs you report (or to roll back to an old version in case we seriously break some code). Every few months we will release the code on the "beta" site to the main site once a particular revision seems stable and contains important changes for all users. |
